Sports’ festivals get kids active in east Middlesbrough

Unity City Academy (UCA) is holding monthly sports’ festivals for local primary schools to encourage young people to take part in a variety of sports from an early age.

UCA is opening its doors for primary schools in the local area, including Pallister Park, Berwick Hills, Corpus Christi, Brambles Farm and Park End primaries.

Each monthly festival gives the primary pupils the chance to try sports such as basketball, football, netball, athletics, cross country and tag rugby.

The primary school students are taking part in the festivals with UCA students helping to mentor and organise sports events for the young children.

UCA has enjoyed major successes in a variety of sports competitions in the last year and the sports department, led by Julia West, Michelle Stelling and Howard Leighton, established a dedicated Sports Academy in 2008 to provide extra coaching sessions to help academy students and young people living in East Middlesbrough to excel in a range of sports and try new activities.

Young people in the area can take part in a variety of sports including athletics, basketball, gymnastics, boys’ and girls’ football, cheerleading, rugby and table tennis to name just a few.

Howard Leighton commented: “Thanks to our great facilities we are in a unique position of being able to offer young people from across the East Middlesbrough area the opportunity to try new sports. It’s important that we encourage primary pupils to enjoy sport from a young age and that’s what these festivals are all about. It’s also a good way of allowing UCA students to share their skills with their younger counterparts.”

Principal of UCA, Patricia Towey added: “We are immensely proud of our PE and sports department which excels in so many sports. The sports’ festivals are a new idea and are proving a huge success amongst the primary schools’ parents, teachers and pupils. Not only are they a fantastic way to get young people active but it gives them a chance to see what secondary school is like and the facilities on offer at UCA and also interact with our students who are organising the festivals.”
