Howards singled out in new UK food guide

Howards in Stokesley is the only restaurant in the Tees Valley to have been included in the new edition of one of the UK’s most important restaurant guides.

The Harden’s Restaurant Guide is published annually and, since it was launched in 1998, has grown to become the largest annual survey of restaurant-goers in the UK.

This year’s guide, which features the best places to eat around the UK, is based on 85,000 reports and features around 3,000 establishments.

Howards in Stokesley is the only Tees Valley restaurant to be recommended by Harden’s. The guide, whose mission statement is to ‘tell it like it is’, says, “Already busy, this recently-established bistro pleases all reporters with its superb mix of dishes; for nice days, there’s a sun trap terrace too.”

Howards is recognised in the guide alongside big names such as London restaurants The Wolseley, The Ivy and J Sheekey’s as well as well-known chains such as Pizza Express and Loch Fyne and famous chefs such as Heston Blumenthal, Jamie Oliver and Rick Stein.
Local businessman, Graham Howard, re-launched Howards last year. As well as investing thousands of pounds in a refurbishment, Mr Howard recruited an experienced team including restaurant manager, Peter Holligon, who has a thirty year reputation at restaurants all over the North, and head chef, Peter Barnes, highly-regarded for his work at Judges Hotel in Kirklevington, near Yarm.

Since taking over the restaurant, Mr Howard has seen its popularity soar with profits up by 20% compared to last year and people now visiting from across the North East and North Yorkshire.

Speaking about this latest accolade from Harden’s, Graham Howard said: “It means a lot to be included in such a prestigious guide alongside some of the most respected names in the restaurant world as we’ve only been up and running about a year. What’s more, the guide is compiled from reviews submitted by restaurant-goers who are very honest. I am thrilled that my brilliant team has put Stokesley on the culinary map as this accolade is all down to their hard work and commitment.”
