Stone is King of the castle and gets an appointment at the Palace

Darlington high-level specialist maintenance company, Stone Technical Services, has secured two prestigious new contracts to complete vital preservation works on Lambeth Palace in London and Lincoln Castle, Lincoln.

Stone won the new contracts, worth in the region of £70,000, thanks to its reputation for completing sympathetic restoration and masonry refurbishment projects on churches and historic buildings across the UK.

At Lambeth Palace, which dates back to the 13th Century and is the residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Stone’s historic buildings’ experts are completing an inspection and condition report for its ancient masonry and also for the famous lantern in the palace’s central library.

Stone is working with London-based specialist architects, Richard Griffiths Architects, at Lambeth Palace which sits on the south bank of the River Thames, opposite the Houses of Parliament. As well as being home to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, Lambeth Palace is also used today for charity events and by the Church of England.
At Lincoln Castle, Stone’s experts have been appointed to carry out conservation works and an inspection of the castle’s medieval areas and previous works dating back many years.

Lincoln Castle, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by English Heritage, was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror and still retains many of its original features. The castle is home to one of only four surviving originals of the Magna Carta.

As well as being a popular tourist attraction, Lincoln Castle is also used to host a range of events such as medieval re-enactments, open air theatre productions and concerts.

Stone Technical Services employs 24 people at its bases in Darlington and Middlesex and plans to continually grow its workforce as well as increase its £2 million turnover by 25%.

Stone specialises in all aspects of high level maintenance, lightning conductor installation and steeplejack services.

This year alone, the company has completed projects all over the UK on a variety of high profile buildings such as the Royal Courts of Justice, St Paul’s Cathedral, York Theatre Royal and Selfridges, for organisations such as Gentoo Sunderland, English Heritage and the National Trust and for well known industrial clients such as INEOS Plant Utilities and SRM in Sunderland.

Managing director of Stone, Dave Stone said: “We are fortunate to benefit from a loyal team who have some of the best skills, qualifications and experience in the industry. This is why we are able to secure such high profile contracts. We are privileged to work on outstandingly beautiful buildings such as Lambeth Palace and Lincoln Castle which both play vital roles in English history.”
